On the help desk side, Nimsoft’s focus is on providing the infrastructure for help desks, and not on the full outsourced help desk space like a Live Virtual Help Desk or its peers, while its goals also stop short of the PSA vendors.

Last week I mentioned a few software companies that were shifting to 24×5 and 24×7 support for their managed services partners. To further the discussion I reached out to NOC (network operations center) and help desk providers to see if 24×7 support is now a requirement for MSPs and their end-customers.

B.C.-based Live Virtual Help Desk wants more business in Canada
1/3/2011 4:10:00 PM By: Maxine Cheung

The goal at B.C.-based Live Virtual Help Desk is to provide help desk and network operations centre (NOC) support to clients of managed service providers (MSPs) around the world.

Neil Jones, president of Live Virtual Help Desk, said the company originally started out as an MSP nine years ago. However, as time went on, the company was getting so many requests from fellow MSPs about its service it got to a point where GensCorp IT wasn't able to take any more customers.

At this point, Jones, who also serves as the president and CEO at GensCorp IT, said he saw an opportunity for a standalone company that would be able to support MSPs around the world. Thus, Live Virtual Help Desk was formed in 2008.

As the managed services market grew up, a healthy number of MSPs decided to outsource their help desks to third-party partners. But now, ConnectWise CEO Arnie Bellini is calling on MSPs — even small MSPs — to build their own help desks. By having a help desk in-house, small MSPs can build person-to-person relationships with end-customers, while more closely monitoring trends and needs within their SMB customer bases, Bellini asserts. So, what’s the upshot for MSPs?

I had the pleasure of meeting Neil Jones from Live Virtual Help Desk at the CompTIA Breakaway and recently at SMB Nation in Las Vegas. Their company offers, obviously, help desk services to managed services providers at a flat fee per desk top with virtually unlimited service. We believe truly believe that offering help desk is one of the best services a computer business can offer to differentiate themselves in a crowded IT market. If you havn't outsourced your help desk then tune in to our show!

Live Virtual Help Desk was a Sponsor of this event

Channel BuzzNeil Jones, president of Victoria, B.C.-based Live Virtual Help Desk, has an odd target demographic in mind for his company’s outsourced help desk service – his nearly 80-year-old father.

That’s because he figures if his company’s technical support staff can help his technophobe father with his computer troubles, then “these guys are certainly geared up to talk to anyone on the face of the Earth than you can think of.”

The company started out as an MSP itself, but spun out its own help desk business when its fellow MSPs started asking about taking advantage of the service.

SMB Secotr Maturity

We’re starting to see the SMB community enter mid-life with obvious signs of maturity. This includes MSP mergers, growth by acquisition and partnering. We’re also seeing SMB ISVs and OEMs do more business with each other. Here is what I mean.

Today Virtual Administrator announced that it has teamed with Live Virtual Help Desk to provide 24/7 help desk services to the SMB MSP community. Both are reputable players who are presenting a “better together” message to the community with this announcement. My take? This is another in what will be a long stream of such announcements coming out of the recession into recovery. There will be teaming scenarios, partnerships and even some M&A. So hang on fast! Here is the announcement from Virtual Administrator and Live Virtual Help Desk this morning.

Virtual Administrator and Live Virtual Help Desk form a “Virtually” Perfect Fit.

Several months ago, MSP coach Stuart Selbst told me to keep an eye on Live Virtual Help Desk (LiveVHD), an upstart provider of NOC (network operations center) and help desk services. It was a quick, generic comment from Selbst. But he had a point: Fast forward to the present, and LiveVHD seems to be inking relationships with a range of MSP-oriented software companies — including a deal with Quest Software’s PacketTrap team. So, what’s LiveVHD’s strategy? My best guess: Competing against NOC and help desk services from the likes of Ingram Micro Seismic, NetEnrich and Zenith Infotech. Here’s some speculation…
